What does it all mean?
Looking to install a new air conditioner? Got your computer out and did all your research? There are quite a few acronyms out there, and we’d like to give you a leg up and give you some terms you should know before you get started.
To begin with, you may come across these letters, HVAC, which is referring to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. It means the whole system has ducting, and it usually put in during construction of the home. It’s tough to get the ducting (ventilation) in once the walls and ceiling are up.
What is SEER?
Of particular importance when buying an AC is usually money. Not only how much for the installation but how much to run the system, especially in the hot summers of Bullhead and Fort Mohave, Arizona. On the front end, the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is what’s is currently used to gauge an air conditioner’s efficiency. In other words, it measures the amount of energy that is required for what your home or business needs to stay cool.
The SEER comes with the high efficiency of 14 to 25.5. (In the US nothing less than 13 is sold) However, you can not just plunk down a unit with the highest SEER. You will need to take into consideration if you live in a dry or humid climate. Here in Mohave County, with your AC running almost nonstop in August and September, you will undoubtedly want to go with the highest SEER.
Another factor to consider is the compressor. This component is the most expensive, and it’s what enables the AC to keep things cool. There are two kinds, single-stage, and two-stage. The single compressor will only run on high, even if the room is small and doesn’t need as much cooling. This constant running can make for a more expensive bill from your electric company.
So, to help with the constant cooling, there is the two-stage compressor. This one can cycle on high or low which results in less energy to cool, thus giving you a lower monthly energy bill. This system is much more efficient.
“Just remember that even if your air conditioner is only ten years old, you may save 20% to 40% of your cooling energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model.” – Energy.gov
